Today’s high temperatures and strong winds have once again contributed to extreme fire activity across the region. The fire is now estimated at more than 6,500 hectares.
Crews continue to make progress on fire breaks at both the northern and southern ends of the fire. Approximately 2 km of fire guard has been completed along Rogers Road, and the guard on Swamp Road has also been extended. On the southern end sprinklers were set up and are continuing to be used as a suppression method.
Aerial bucketing operations, supported by ground crews, were carried out to help protect residential structures in vulnerable areas.
Additional water bombers were deployed again today to assist in protecting homes as needed.
Localized aerial assessments are planned in residential zones to identify hot spots and provide critical support to firefighting teams on the ground.
We are actively working with partners to develop a plan for assessing properties impacted by the fire. Identifying homes that may have been lost is a top priority, and assessments will begin as soon as it is safe to do so.
We are hopeful that tomorrow’s expected change in weather conditions will offer a much-needed reprieve, allowing for more effective fire suppression efforts.
