Community Evacuation Update

Town of Small Point, Broad Cove, Blackhead, Adam's Cove

Update for Evacuated Residents – August 12, 2025, 11:00

Dear Residents of Burnt Point, Gull Island, Northern Bay, Ochre Pit Cove, Western Bay, Small Point to Adams Cove, Kingston, Perry’s Cove and Salmon Cove.

Key Messages

  • As predicted, yesterday was a very challenging day for firefighting. Weather conditions are similar for today, so the message remains the same.
  • Unfortunately, the new fire at Paddy’s Pond is requiring some of the assets that have been focused on the Kingston fire. While this is difficult to hear, we need to trust that Incident Command are making the best decisions possible with the resources that are available. There are five wildfires currently in progress in our province.
  • The communities of Perry’s Cove and Salmon Cove to the South that are on evacuation order do not appear to be at a high risk. Important: residents are reminded to avoid entering the evacuation zone. All of our resources need to be focused on the fire, not security.
  • As the fire expands and the days pass, it is increasingly difficult to deal with the uncertainty about whether your home has been lost to the fire. We understand. Last week, during a lull in the fire activity, we were able to conduct an assessment in the town and officially advise those that had lost their home. Since the change in conditions on Saturday, it has been far too dangerous for us to conduct a similar assessment. We are aware that images from the scene are being shared directly with property owners. Please know that these informal channels cannot be used to inform our assessment. Given the current level of the fire, the situation with respect to that property could change in an instant.

Current Status

  • The size of the fire is now at 6370 hectares.
  • Water bombers will continue to focus their efforts on the northern edge of the fire, with additional support directed to the southern perimeter as needed based on evolving conditions.
  • On the Southern perimeter, work continues to remove fuel and expand the size of the fuel break along the sections constructed by heavy equipment.
  • There is no timeline yet for return.
  • The reception center at Carbonear Academy remains open and staffed; residents are encouraged to utilize this facility for support and resources. The center is not just for shelter.
  • Essential supplies, including food, water, personal hygiene items, clothes and medical services, are being provided at the site.

Safety Reminders

  • Follow all instructions from emergency personnel.
  • Keep personal identification and essential items with you at all times.
  • Reach out to reception center staff for any support you may need.
  • If you feel unsafe at any time, please approach center staff.
